Terms of service
Last updated 4 August 2026. These are the rules for using Liferafts. By creating an account you agree to them. The privacy notice explains what we store about you and why.
Who you are agreeing with
Liferafts is run by Elliot Smith, based in Victoria, Australia. "We" and "us" mean him. "You" means the person whose account it is. To ask about anything on this page, email privacy@theliferafts.com.
What Liferafts is
A place for a small group of people to share goals, record numbers against them, and write each other a weekly update.
It is not a health, medical, fitness, financial or professional service, and nothing in it is advice. Some of what people track here is health related, such as bodyweight, sleep, resting heart rate or days without a drink. Do not use Liferafts to make a decision about your health. Talk to a doctor.
Your account
You must be 18 or over. One account per person. Do not share your password or let anyone else use your account. What happens under your account is treated as done by you. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
Give us an email address that reaches you. It is how we verify the account, reset a password, and send you notices about the service.
What it costs
Liferafts is free to use at the moment. If that changes we will tell you before it applies to you, and you will never be charged without agreeing to a price first.
What you write stays yours
Your goals, numbers, posts, comments and images belong to you. We do not claim ownership of any of it, and nothing on this page transfers it to us.
You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, host, copy, back up and display your content, for one purpose: running Liferafts for you, and showing your content to you and to the active members of the groups you chose to share it with.
We do not publish your content, sell it, hand it to advertisers, or use it to train an AI model. The only others who hold it are the providers who host and deliver it on our behalf, each named in the privacy notice, and they may only handle it to do that.
The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from the rolling window backups take to age out, which the privacy notice describes. You confirm you have the right to post what you post, and that it does not infringe anyone else's rights.
What belongs to us
The software and source code, the design and layout, the name, the logo and the branding, and the documentation belong to us or to the people we license them from. Using the service gives you no ownership of it. You have a personal, non-exclusive right to use Liferafts for its purpose, which you cannot transfer, and which lasts as long as your account.
You agree not to infringe those rights, and not to attempt to. In particular, do not:
- Copy, sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute any part of the service.
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, or try to derive the source code, except to the extent the law allows despite this term.
- Copy the design, layout or wording to pass something else off as Liferafts or as connected to it.
- Use the name, logo or branding without written permission, other than to refer to the service accurately.
- Remove or obscure a copyright, trade mark or ownership notice.
- Get around, disable or test a technical measure that protects the service or limits what an account can do.
- Use the service, or anything taken from it, to build a competing product.
If you think you have found a security flaw, tell us at privacy@theliferafts.com. We will not treat a report made in good faith as a breach of these terms.
If you send us feedback or an idea for a feature, we may act on it and we owe you nothing for it.
Write your own words
Posts and comments must be written by the person they are attributed to. Do not post under someone else's account, and do not have an AI write an update for you.
What you may not do
- Harass, threaten, bully or abuse anyone in a group.
- Post someone else's private information, or anything about a person who has not agreed to be written about here.
- Post anything illegal, or anything you do not have the right to post.
- Impersonate anyone, or sign up as someone you are not.
- Try to reach an account, group or piece of data that is not yours, or probe the service for ways to.
- Scrape the site, hammer the API past its published limits, or work around a limit rather than asking us to raise it.
- Resell the service, or run it on someone else's behalf as if it were yours.
When we step in
We do not read your groups.
We can remove or hide content that breaks these terms or the law, and we may do it without notice where leaving it up would cause harm. We will tell the person who wrote it, and say why, unless the law stops us or telling them would put someone at risk. Removing a post is not the same as closing an account.
If something in one of your groups needs our attention, email privacy@theliferafts.com. Being able to act does not oblige us to, and not acting on one thing does not stop us acting on another.
Groups
A group is run by its administrators, who approve who joins and can remove a member. What you share with a group is visible to its active members, and you decide what you share. If you leave or are removed, you keep your own history, and your posts stay with the group unless you delete them.
What other members write is theirs. Do not copy it out of the group or repeat it elsewhere.
Integrations and the API
You can connect a third-party service such as Strava, and you can reach your own data through our API or MCP server. An API key identifies you, so guard it like a password. Anything done with it is done as you.
A connected service is governed by its own terms as well as these. We may change, limit or remove an integration, and we apply rate limits.
Keeping it running
There is no uptime guarantee, and there will be times Liferafts is down or slow. We may change how a feature works, or withdraw one, and if a change materially affects you we will tell you.
Keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose. You can export any metric as a spreadsheet, and read everything through the API.
Ending it
You can delete your account yourself at any time, from your profile page. It is immediate and permanent, and it takes your goals, numbers, images, posts and comments with it, including the ones in other people's groups.
We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and we will say why unless there is a good reason not to. We may act immediately where it is serious, such as abuse of another member, an attack on the service, or anything illegal.
We can also close Liferafts down. If we do, we will give you at least 30 days of notice unless something outside our control makes that impossible, and export will keep working for the whole of that time. If you have paid for anything, we will refund the part you have not used.
Where we stand if something goes wrong
Nothing here excludes or limits any right you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded. If a consumer guarantee applies, it applies.
Beyond that, and as far as the law allows: Liferafts is provided as it is and as it is available, with no promise that it will be uninterrupted, error free, or that it will help you reach a goal. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profit or opportunity, for what another member writes or does, or for a third-party service failing to send us your data.
Where our liability can lawfully be limited rather than excluded, it is limited to supplying the service to you again, or paying the cost of that.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, this page changes and the date at the top changes with it. If a change materially affects you we will tell you before it takes effect. Using Liferafts after that means you accept the new version. If you do not accept it, delete your account.
The rest
Liferafts is run from Australia. You may use it from another country, but complying with that country's law is your responsibility.
If Liferafts is sold or handed on, this agreement goes with it. You cannot transfer your account or this agreement to anyone else.
These terms and the privacy notice are the whole agreement between us. If a court decides part of this page cannot be enforced, the rest still stands. Not enforcing something straight away does not mean we have given it up. These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, without regard to the rules that would apply another place's law, and you and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria and the courts that hear appeals from them.
